  1. Oh, I just love Harry & David pears! We would give pears or honeybell oranges from Florida when we gave fruit, unless of course, we had made jam.

  4. That’s a tough one – both make such great gifts. I think it depends on the season, but in MN it’s always fun to give a gift of fresh fruit in the winter. And also fun to give (or receive!) a gift of homemade preserves.

  5. I’ve been sending Hale’s minibells to my favorite library for several years. The juice runs down everyone’s chins. Harry and David’s will be a new merchant for me.

  6. Next year I’ll make more jam to give out. This year I’m planning on giving some canned cocktail cherries, if I can get my act together.

  8. West Michigan is a big fruit-growing area and it would be hard to choose what I would give–we regularly share blueberries, cherries, and apples with family members.

  10. Can’t say I have ever given fruit as a gift..but if something is in season and I have extra, I certainly do share! Excited for the chance of winning some pears! Yummy!

  11. I have given fresh fruit occasionally–when something is so perfect at the Farmers Market, for example. We sent a box of the Harry & David pears to my stepson and his family a few years ago. He called and said “I finally feel like a grown-up.” He was remembering when patients would send Harry & David pears and other gifts to his father’s medical practice…
Preserves are a terrific gift, and have the advantage of not being tied to a single ripeness season.

BOTH, in this best of all possible worlds!

  12. My favorite is fresh fruit. It’s easy to put together a beautiful basket and an alternative to a lot of calorie-laden treats. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the giveaway. (shirparks@gmail.com)

  13. I usually give preserves like peach butter. I have a wonderful recipe for pear gingerbread cake(think pineapple upside down cake with pear slices and gingerbread instead)that will make a great gift if I win pears!

  14. Local gifts are bags of oranges with a copy of the story “The Orange.” Another great fruit is lemon curd sauce with crumpets.

  15. I’ve given both fresh and preserved fruit, so it depends on what is available. We have made many types of jams, preserves, jellies, and syrups from fruits that grow near us, and they are such a great change from store-bought products. I do love fresh fruit, though, too!
