Remember when we had to get rid of one of our backyard chickens last year? It was hard and I don’t want to have to do it again but one of our hens hasn’t laid an egg in months. At the top of the pecking order, she’s quite mean to the other hens who are laying. I had to give her a stern talking to.
Caddie Woodlawn is her name and she’s a bit of a “chicken diva” and sort of turned her nose up at me. (Side note: as the mother of 2 teenagers, I am used to this sort of behavior and so it didn’t faze me a bit.)
After the big talking to, here’s what our chicken Caddie Woodlawn produced:

The smallest egg ever. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw it already. It barely filled a teaspoon. She saved herself from chicken stew for now.
Weekly Meal Plan
I meal plan at the beginning of each week, before heading to the grocery store. Weekly meal planning saves money, reduces food waste, and keeps me from saying, “Let’s go out to eat!” If you need more reasons to meal plan every week, check HERE. Both of my kids cook dinner once-a-week and do the clean up after the meal. If you want to learn how to pull that off at your house, check HERE. If you’re looking for more meal planning ideas, check HERE.
This meal plan is from Monday, February 11, 2013 to Sunday, February 17, 2013.
Monday: pinto beans (freezer) and cheese burritos with fresh salsa
Tuesday: fresh eggs from our chickens’ strata with vegetables
Wednesday: lentils – vegetarian (no meat day, Ash Wednesday)
Thursday: roasted beet puree over whole wheat pasta, green salad, and flourless chocolate cake (Valentine’s Day sweetheart’s dinner) my daughter made dinner this night
Friday: fish, brown rice, and something green (I don’t remember – the meal plan says salad? or greens?)
Saturday: whole wheat pasta with garlic sauce (both kids made dinner this night as my husband and I had dinner group)
Sunday: flank steak, baked potatoes, and cabbage (my son made dinner this night and my husband taught him how to grill on the charcoal Weber)

Love the chicken story. Reminds me of being on my grandparents farm in the summer and reaching into the nest to retrieve eggs, Gramma standing near saying “Be careful you might get a surprise!” Because once in a while, there would be a snake in the nest sucking on the eggs. We would have the eggs and fresh biscuts with bacon and gravy for breakfast along with cows milk from the milking the morning before. She would leave the milk on the counter while it starined thru a cheese cloth then she would set it in the frige for it to seperate the cream from the milk.such good memories!! As far as planning a weeks worth of meals, it is just my husband and I now so I have grown lax in this area. I know for sure my hubby wouldn’t eat half of what you have on the menu….but I would! Thanks for another great post and reminding me of my childhood. Blessings!

Pam,
What a sweet story! Well, except for the snake part. I would not like that surprise!
I can see not doing as much planning when there are fewer people at home and less mouths to feed.
Thanks for leaving a comment and for the blessings!
