There’s something really great happening in the Seattle, Washington area and it’s Compostival! What is that, you’re wondering? (I was wondering what it was, too, when I first saw the word!) Well, it combines some favorite fall activities: composting, pizza, and football! It’s really a celebration because folks who live in the area have done a fantastic job reducing the amount of trash they’re generating by keeping food and yard debris out of their garbage cans. There’s a lot less waste going to the landfills! That’s quite an accomplishment – and that means a lot of households had to get used to a new routine – which can be a hassle.
From Compostival:
“Today King County, Seattle Public Utilities and Cedar Grove are thanking local residents for keeping 350,000 tons of food and yard waste out of the landfills this year. Together, they’ve kicked off Compostival!, which rewards residents with a number of thank you prizes, including free pizza, compost, even premium Seahawks tickets.
Scratch tickets are available at Zeeks Pizza from today through Oct. 17 with prizes redeemable through Oct. 31. Every ticket also comes with a coupon for a free bag of compost with the purchase of two bags.
Why compost in the fall? Most people don’t know it, but fall is just the right time to be working in the garden. Plants need a boost of nutrients before they settle in for a long, hard winter, and thrive when given a layer of compost in their beds. Compost also slows stormwater pollution, which peaks in the fall, when the rains come in. So brave the rain—and spread some free locally-produced compost. Then tuck in, eat some pizza and watch some football.”
